Dodgeball Rules

(revised 6/28/05)

Each player must present a UF Gator 1 Card before each contest to be eligible to participate. No exceptions.

The tournament will consist of 32 coed teams. Each game will be 5 minutes, with a possible 1- minute sudden death. There will be 7 players on the court at one time for each team. There must be either 4 men and 3 women, or vice versa (difference of 1). A team must have a minimum of 5 players to start. No subs will be allowed during the game; however, there is no limit to how many players are on the actual roster.

THE GAME
The object of the game is to eliminate all opposing players by getting them "OUT". This may be done by:
1. Hitting an opposing player with a thrown LIVE ball below the shoulders.
2. Catching a LIVE ball thrown by your opponent before it touches the ground.

Definition: LIVE - A ball that has been thrown and has not touched anything, including the floor/ground, another ball, official or other item outside of the playing field (wall, ceiling, etc) (exception: a ball hitting another player is live until it hits one of the aforementioned)

If a team catches a live ball thrown by an opponent before it touches the ground, one player from that team may return. The first person to be eliminated from the game will be the first person to come back into the game.

TIMING AND WINNING A GAME
The first team to legally eliminate all opposing players will be declared the winner. A 5-minute time limit has been established for each contest. If neither team has been eliminated at the end of the five minutes, the team with the greater number of players remaining will be declared the winner. In the case of an equal number of players remaining after regulation, a 1-minute sudden-death overtime period will be played. The sudden-death will be played by the remaining players on the court.

At the end of pool play, all 32 teams will advance and be seeded according to their record. If teams have the same record, the total time of their games will be the tiebreaker. The team with the least amount of time will be seeded higher.

THE OPENING RUSH
There will be 5 balls along the center line (one free ball in the center and two other balls directly adjacent on each side). Players from each team will start behind their end-line. Each team will retrieve the two balls designated for them on their right side of the center ball, with the center ball being for either team. After 30 seconds, all balls will be free if left at the center line. After grabbing a ball, a player must return behind the attack line in order to throw at the opposing team. Any ball thrown before the ball is brought back behind the attack line, will be an illegal throw.

* An illegal throw will not count if the ball hits an opposing player. However, if the ball is caught by the opposing player on an illegal throw, the player who threw the ball will be â??OUT.â?

BOUNDARIES
During play, all players must remain within the boundary lines. Players may leave the boundaries through their end-line only to retrieve stray balls, and must return through their end-line. If a player steps on or beyond the center line, that player is out.

5-SECOND VIOLATION
In order to reduce stalling, a violation will be called if a team in the lead controls all five (5) balls on their side of the court for more than 5 seconds. In this case, the team will be warned for their first violation. The second violation will result in disqualification for that team.
