Body Composition

The body is made up of lean body mass (bones, muscles, connective tissue, and organs) and fat tissue.  Fat tissue is essential for vital functions, but an abundance is unhealthy.  Body composition is a tool used to assess the ratio of fat tissue and lean body mass as compared to body weight.  The majority of fat is stored just below the skin; therefore, estimating fat using the skin fold measurements can be used as an indicator of total body fat.

Gym-goers are welcome to come to the Personal Training and Assessment Center to have their percent body fat assessed without an appointment during our office hours.  It is recommended to wait at least one month between assessments.  Body fat assessments performed after exercising are inaccurate, so be sure to come prior to working out.
