3-on-3 Rules
(revised 09/10/06)
Each player must present a UF Gator 1 Card before each contest to be eligible to participate. No Exceptions.
All intramural participants are responsible for their own medical expenses. Any student unsure of their physical condition should check with their family physician or the Student Infirmary before participating in intramural sports.
Game time is forfeit time.
The officiating will be done by an official who is in absolute control of the game. Teams are responsible for keeping their spectators under control. Misconduct of spectators, players or coaches can result in assessment of a technical foul, ejection or forfeiture of the game. Spectators must also remain in the area designated by the officials. The official shall have the power to make decisions on any matters or questions not specifically covered in the rules.
Intramural 5-on-5 basketball rules will govern play with the following modifications:
-
Matches will be the best 2 of 3 games. A team can win by either scoring 15 points with a lead of two, or by being the first team to score 18 points. There will be a 15-minute time limit for each game. The team ahead at the end of the 15 minutes will win that game. During the regular season, if a tie occurs after the 15 minutes have expired, the next made basket wins that game. A coin toss will determine who has possession of the ball for overtime. This coin toss has no bearing on the alternating possession. During the playoffs, the team must win by two.
-
All field goals within the 3-point line will count as one point. Any shot beyond the 3-point line will count as two. Teams will alternate possession on made baskets. The ball must be passed in after made baskets.
-
The defensive player must give the offensive player that checked the ball in, at least 3 feet to pass the ball to a teammate. Three feet will be designated by the area between volleyball's red line and badminton's green line. The official will inform the teams before play as to exactly which lines these are.
-
Odd or even choice determines which team puts the ball in play to start the contest. For the rest of the game (including subsequent games) the alternating possession rule is in effect.
-
Every time the ball changes possession, it must be taken back (both feet and the ball) anywhere behind the three-point line. This must be done even if a shot has not been taken. If a team does not take the ball back properly then the play is dead at the first shot attempt by the violating team. This will result in a turnover.
-
Each team will be granted one 30 second time out per game. Substitutions may be made at anytime during a dead ball. No substitutions may be made after a made basket.
-
Players foul out on their third foul per contest. That player can then re-enter upon the next contest.
-
Fighting will result in disqualification of both teams.
-
The three-second lane rule will be in effect.
-
No jewelry (including rubber bands) may be worn. Exception: Medical Alert tags may be worn. No hats or bandannas may be worn by any player on the court.
-
Teams must begin the game with at least two players, and may finish with a minimum of two players. Teams are allowed to have as many players on their roster as they wish, but may only play a maximum of 5 players per contest.
-
Knee braces made of hard, unyielding substances covered on both sides with all edges overlapped and any other hard substances covered with at least 1/2 inch of slow recovery rubber or similar material will be allowed.
-
If a foul is called and the shot is made, the basket will count but the ball will change possession (for exceptions see rules 14 & 15).
-
FOULS: All fouls are common fouls.
-
For the first six (6) fouls, the ball will be taken back by the fouled team.
-
Beginning with the seventh (7) team foul, (if shooting), the player fouled will be awarded one (1) free throw for all shots inside the 3-point line, or they will be awarded two (2) one (1) point free throws if the player shot behind the 3-point line.
-
If the foul was not a shooting foul, the player fouled will be awarded (1) one free throw. After the free throw(s) the ball will change possession, regardless if the free throw(s) was made or not.
-
On the tenth (10) team foul
-
No basket: the player fouled will be awarded one (1) free throw (or 2 free throws if shooting behind the 3-point line) and the shooting team will retain possession, regardless if the free throw is made or not.
-
Made basket: the basketball will count and the shooting team will retain possession, regardless if the free throw is made or not.
-
-
-
If a technical foul is called, the other team will receive a point and be awarded the ball. Two (2) technical fouls on any player will result in that player being ejected. Any ejected player must meet with the Graduate Assistant in charge of the sport before the team's next game.
