American Heart Association Heartsaver First Aid/CPR/AED

Description:Gives individuals the knowledge and skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for breathing, cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses, including how to use an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for victims of sudden cardiac arrest, until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. This class includes CPR/AED and First Aid Components for adults and children. Certification is current for 2 years.

This course is designed for: UF RecSports employees (non-lifeguards)
Students that require certification for internships or jobs
Individuals that are interested in learning basic First Aid/CPR/AED

AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers

Description: The American Heart Association’s Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers course is designed to teach the adult, child and infant skills of CPR, use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and relief of Foreign Body Airway Obstruction (FBAO) for participants in the healthcare profession. THIS CLASS DOES NOT INCLUDE FIRST AID. Certification is current for 2 years. This is the prerequisite course needed in order to acquire the BLS for Healthcare Providers Instructor certification.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding

Description: The American Red Cross Lifeguarding course is designed to teach skills and knowledge to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until emergency medical services take over. This class includes, Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR/AED. Candidates MUST pass a prerequisite swimming skill evaluation. Certification is current for 2 years. Course Length: 25 hours; 30 minutes. Participants MUST attend all class dates.
 

Prerequisite Swimming Skills Evaluation

• 300-yard continuous swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both
• Tread water using legs only for 2 minutes without support or stopping
• Within 1 minute and 40 seconds, swim 20 yards, surface dive to 7 - 10 feet and retrieve a 10lb brick. Return to surface and swim back to starting point with both hands holding brick and keeping face at the surface. Exit the water without using ladder or steps.

American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor

Description:The purpose of the American Red Cross Swimming and Water Safety program is to teach people how to be safe in, on or around water and to teach individuals of different ages and abilities how to swim. The Water Safety Instructor course will train instructor candidates to teach water safety, including the Basic Water Rescue course, six levels of the Learn-to-Swim program as well as Parent and Child Aquatics. Certification is current for 2 years. This course is designed for individuals who want to pursue a job as a swimming instructor. Course Length: 30 hours; 30 minutes. Participants MUST attend all class dates.

Prerequisites:

• Be at least 16 years of age on or before the final scheduled lesson of this course.
• Successfully complete the Fundamentals of Instructor Training course.
• Demonstrate the ability to perform the following swimming skills:
  • Swim the following strokes consistent with Level 4 Stroke Performance Charts
    • Front Crawl (Freestyle) – 25 yards
    • Back Crawl – 25 yards
    • Breaststroke – 25 yards
    • Elementary Backstroke – 25 yards
    • Sidestroke – 25 yards
    • Butterfly – 15 yards
  • Maintain position on back for 1 minute in deep water (floating or sculling)
  • Tread water for 1 minute
